by on March 31, 2014

Capturing the moment is every authors goal. We want to express emotions so clearly that the reader’s impacted when they put the book down. So I’ve brought you a collection of authors who are all using the exact same photograph to inspire a short scene. (This month we even have a poem!)  They are capturing the picture with their words.

As always you’re welcome to give it a go and post your story scene in the comments, in fact, I encourage you to try it! Here’s how to do it…

This months picture prompt

Use the prompt to write a 350 word scene.

No limitations.

No restrictions.

Let your imagination go wild.

Alongside every entry, is the authors contact links, and most recent book cover.

If you like what they did, please leave a comment or even better, buy a book!

So, here is what the authors came up with this month….

The faint scent of flowers filled her nose as she took a deep breath and stretched. Well that’s lovely to wake up to, she thought, drifting on the brink of sleep. It took another moment, and another large inhale of the sweet fragrance before she remembered that there shouldn’t be flowers in her room. No one was supposed to know she was here.

Her eyes opened to find a single perfect red rose just inches from her nose. Its crimson petals stood out in stark contrast against the cold white sheets of her hospital bed. Lifting her head slightly, she reached for the delicate flower, inhaling its intoxicating fragrance, while racking her brain for the source of the gift.

The soft sound of someone shifting in place drew her attention and she gasped when her eyes found him. Dustin watched her silently from the corner of the tiny hospital room. His eyes weary, and his skin pale.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Liz?” he asked. She hated that she had caused the broken haunted tremor in his tone, but she knew she had made the right choice.

“It wasn’t important.”

Fury and betrayal reddened his cheeks, and he shot forward until he loomed over her bed. His wide shoulders and muscular build should have been intimidating, but she found even in this dark hour they were comforting. “Wasn’t important? How can you say that? This is life changing!”

Swallowing hard, she pushed the button to lift the head of the bed, while clutching the rose to her chest. It was just like Dustin to bring such a brilliant spot of beauty into a dimly lit room. It was his nature. “I don’t want it to change your life, Dustin. That’s why I ended things with you.”

“So you broke my heart, because you didn’t want to inconvenience me with your illness?” he snapped.

It killed her that he would think that. She wanted nothing more than to reach for him, and let him hold her again.

“No. I did it because I can’t stand the thought of you watching me die.”

She came awake feeling desperate with desire as his rock hard shaft pressed into her backside and his hand gripped her breast. Calloused fingers plucked and pinched at her nipples through the light cotton nightgown. His mouth explored the delicate skin behind her ear. He knew that was her erogenous zone, especially when he scraped his teeth over it then laved it with his tongue like he was doing now. He’d always been able to get her lust rocketing from zero to sixty in nothing flat.

“I love you baby. Thank you for the roses.” He whispered.

She reached back and felt his hot skin, naked as usual. She slid her hand along his hip, got a good hand hold, then arched back into his erection, already feeling an overwhelming need to have him inside her. His other hand ran down to the edge of her gown, bunching and gathering it in his fist then jerking it above her hips. The scrape of his calloused hand sliding along her thigh caused goose bumps to rise in its wake and shivers of desire to race straight to her womb. His mouth continued its exploration of her shoulders, his one hand increased its demands on her nipples, and his other hand wandered up to her clit, his thumb brushing it steadily. Apparently it was one of the mornings they both woke desperate for some hard, rough loving. He grabbed her upper thigh and placed it on top of his. Reaching down, he aligned his cock with her opening and….

She jerked awake to the sound of the alarm going off. Blindly reaching to hit the button, the tears began to fall as she fell back against her pillow. She didn’t want to turn over, she knew what she would see. But she had to know for sure. Rolling over, she opened her eyes and looked at the pillow on the other side of the bed.

There on the pillow was the indention where someone had slept, and one of the long stemmed roses she’d left at her husbands grave yesterday….

She lay there twirling the rose he’d given her, staring at the flower as if it would tell her what she should do. Without a doubt she wanted him. Every time he was near she felt the blood pulsing through her veins.

And there was no doubt he wanted her as well. He’d made that perfectly clear on multiple occasions. She just had to figure out what she was going to do about it. Could she risk her heart again? Should she?

The image of him sitting across from her at dinner filled her head. He’d been a perfect gentleman, but every time he looked at her she kept getting flashes of him with is face between her legs and her hands in his hair. It had been enough to keep her on edge all night.

Things couldn’t go on the way they were, she knew that. Something was going to have to give, and she was pretty sure it was going to end up being her. All ready her body was singing with barely contained sexual energy.

Shifting onto her back, she brought the rose to her nose with one hand, and moved her other below the sheet. Feeling the silky edge of her panties, she slipped her hand beneath the material until she could feel the heat radiating from her pussy.

She pushed a single finger inside, not wanting to rush things. Her moisture coated her finger liberally giving evidence of just how the thought aroused her.

As she continued to pump her fingers in and out, she climbed higher toward that peak. Releasing the rose, she snaked her other hand down to join the first in her quest for release.

It didn’t take much. Her fingers circled her clit with the certainty of a woman who knew her body well. She knew exactly how to rub…to touch herself…in order to reach her goal.

A strangled moan escaped her lips at the same moment her phone rang.

She glanced over to the caller ID, and chuckled. It was him. Maybe it was a sign.

Sunlight danced across her face, and Amelia bit back a whimper. She used to love the warming rays of the sun, used to spend hours sunbathing, before…

Always before … Before that one amazing, life changing night she met the man of her dreams, and sunshine became the enemy. The barrier between them, that meant she woke up on her own every morning.

She rolled over and swiped the useless tears away. There on the pillow that still held his scent, lay a single red rose, and Amelia resisted the urge to crush the damn thing. She wanted to rip the delicate petals off its stem, and grind them into the floor, until they were nothing but dust.

It would be a fitting end to another symbol of their day light separation.

Arwin always left a rose in his place, because they’d met in the rose garden of her father’s house. Bored out of her skull by the inane dinner conversations Amelia had wandered into the night. The rose garden had called to her, the air heavy with the fragrant perfume of the flower, and she’d plucked a rose off the bush.

The thorns had dug into her tender skin, and Arwin had stepped out of the shadows. Tall, impossibly handsome, and as pale as the moon bathing them in its eerie glow, his black eyes had seemed to see straight into her soul, as she fell under his spell.

“Let me, Amelia.”

His deep, slightly accented voice had wrapped itself around her senses, and she’d stood mesmerized as he’d dipped his dark head and sucked her finger into his mouth.

Amelia groaned and threw the rose across the sun strewn room.

Tonight she would find the strength to resist him. There was no future in this. He wouldn’t turn her, and every day that passed she got older, whereas he stayed his perfect form.

Tonight would be different… it had to be.

Hopes aspirated

Wanting to persevere, certain that happiness could prevail

So deserving

Longing to feed your need within

Brighter days could carry us, entwining with desire.

A pathway unexplored, yet paved with joy and love.

To emerge from a shady, forest

An open field, a vibrant sun, the vast promise before us

The depth of our connection, advancing

A second set of eyes did not see, sequestered by fear.

Denial is the enemy

Blinded and burned by the rays of my own sun

A veil conceals my resolution, an ending unknown

The fearful pain of change

Guilt represses and confines

Powerful forces go against an acute energy.

A potency that weaved between us

Soft pedals wither and dry, your absence a cold space

Reality abandoned

Emotions took flight, reaching new heights, my wants, only my own

I wander on, berating my reasoning.

The light of our fire extinguished

Your corner now dark

Thoughts of you enable me to hope, yet, once again.

Molly moaned with arousal as the scent of roses drew her from sleep. She opened her eyes and saw a long stemmed red rose lying on the palm of her hand. Behind her the sound of the shower turning off caught her attention and she threw back the covers and jumped from the bed. As she reached the open bathroom door a heavily muscled man with short black hair and dark blue eyes stepped out of the shower. Molly screamed then rushed toward him and jumped into his arms. “Jack,” she sobbed, unable to say anything more as her throat tightened with emotion and tears of joy flooded her eyes.

Jack tightened his arms around her naked body.  “I was going to wake you as soon as I had a shower, baby.” He stroked her back as he carried her into the bedroom.

“I love you,” Molly said.

“I love you, too.” Jack lowered her to the bed then came down over her.

She spread her legs and the scent of her arousal mixed with the fragrance of the rose he had brought her. He smiled into her eyes then kissed her as he bumped the head of his cock against her pussy. “Are you wet for me, baby?”

“Oh, yes, Jack.”

“Do you want me?”

“So much.” Molly lifted her hips to his, and he thrust into her a couple inches then pulled back. “Jack, don’t torture me.”

He chuckled. “Slow and easy, baby. It’ll be better that way.”

She slid her hands down his back to his butt and tried to pull him into her.

“Huh uh,” Jack said then reached back and grabbed her hands and placed them above her head. “Keep them there or I’ll restrain you.”

“Come on, Jack, it’s been so long.”

“You need a reminder of who’s in charge,” Jack said as he moved back onto his spread knees between her legs then picked up the rose and brushed it over her breasts. “Torture time, baby.”

If one more person had said to her, it’s only a rose. Marcy might have done that person an injury.

A rose yes, but it was a red rose. Someone, and she had no idea who, was playing a cruel trick.

The song played in her head, and vied with the sounds of waves on the sand and a soft breeze in the trees. As she closed her eyes she was there.

With him.

Oh so long ago but oh so vivid.

The best day of her life.

Barefoot dressed in a white dress, and carrying a red rose.

Almost like now.

Except now there was no sea, no sand, breeze or him.

Just her and a rose.

Marcy curled on her side and inhaled the scent.

It was the same. The perfume that haunted her dreams and made her wake, crying and stretching out her hand for him.

To reach…nothing.

It’s long over, accept it.

How could she when this happened?

It was bad enough remembering the good times, the happy times when she thought nothing could separate them, nothing could spoil what they had.

Then she grew up and realized she’d lived a dream.

Marcy twisted the rose between her fingers. He might have said a red rose, to remember me by, but it was s o long ago.

Why now after all these years? Who knew and decided to yank her chain? Upset her, and make her remember?

“I did Marcy.”

That voice!

That well loved remembered voice.

Marcy sat up still holding the rose close to her. The scent seemed stronger as it teased her nostrils, tugged at her senses, and played with her heart strings.

“I’m here.”

He walked toward her, arms outstretched.

“You’re dead.”

“Oh yes my love, and now, so are you.”

His hands gripped her throat and he kissed her. The world went black and she gave one last long sigh. This was what she’d been waiting for.

“Ah love, together again at last.” His breath was hot on her neck. “Welcome to my world.”

The rose fell to the floor.

Charley laid her head on her pillow holding the single red rose left for her by the one man that was forbidden to her.  Jonathan was her best friend Leslie’s ex-boyfriend.   They broke up almost ten years ago and Leslie married a wonderful man. They had two adorable kids.  But Charley couldn’t help but feel guilty.  This was Leslie’s ex.

She ran into Jonathan at the local hotel bar.  Her employers rented the banquet all at the local hotel.  After the banquet everyone headed to the bar.  A couple of margaritas later she was feeling good.  That’s when she saw him, Jonathan.

He had been sitting at the bar watching her as she drank and interacted with her friends.  The moment their eyes met it was like a magnet pulling them towards one another.  Neither could resist.

“Jonathan.”  Was that her husky voice?

“Charley, you look amazing.”  His eyes darkened with interest as he looked her over head to toe.

“You too. What are you doing here?”  Charley didn’t realize until it was too late that she had tossed her long hair to the side flirtatiously.  Stop that Charley!  But damn if Jonathan didn’t look hot.   It made her lick her lips.

“I am thinking of moving back to town.  I have a room here while I weigh my options.”  He pulled her to a nearby table.

“Leslie is married now with kids.”  Why had she told him that?

He smiled at her.  “I know.  I spoke with her over the phone two days ago.  She recommended I stay at this hotel.”

“Oh.”  Her conversation skills were not up to par.  And when he asked if she wanted to dance she should have said no.  It was inevitable that their bodies reacted to one another being so close.  One dance led to another which led to a kiss that changed her life forever.

They spent an unbelievable night together.  He asked to see her again and she had said yes.  What the hell was she going to do now?

Late morning light poured in through the windows and insisted she wake. God, how long had it been since she’d slept so well? Her schedule had been crazy and the stress even more so. The fear had been the worst. Too many nights laying awake staring at the ceiling for hours, waiting for dawn to come had taken its toll.

Until last night.

She released a sigh, turned and saw the single perfect rose on the pillow he’d used last night. He must’ve cut it from her garden and placed it there before he left for the day.

He’d promised she’d be safe.

She’d known Mick for years and they’d always had a casual friendship until last night. Even though she’d tried to hide them, he’d seen her hands shaking as she’d gotten ready to leave work. Stupidly, not wanting to bother anyone, she’d tried to hide it, play it off. He’d seen right through her and pinned her against the wall until she’d told him what was wrong. But instead of being scared by his actions she’d been breathless with anticipation. Desire blazed inside her and he’d seen it.

Eventually he’d gotten the story out of her and taken her home. She’d tried to make him leave, but he’d refused and insisted on staying and had even hidden his car in her garage so it couldn’t be seen. He’d waited patiently while she told him the story. He’d held his tongue, but she’d seen his fury.

He’d stayed up late and when it became obvious she wouldn’t be able to sleep, yet again, he’d taken the matter into his hands and made love to her until she hadn’t been able to hold her eyes open. He’d promised her he watch over and keep her safe. He’d held her in his arms.

“Hey there gorgeous, how do you feel?” She turned her head to see him standing in the doorway, dressed in dark jeans and sporting dark, morning stubble.

“You stayed.”

“I did and I’m not going anywhere until this is settled. Or after. You’re stuck with me.”
