In the Spotlight: Mardi Maxwell

New Release: Jackson’s Sub (The Doms of Club Mystique 2)’s-Sub

Mardi Maxwell

Who will win when a determined Dom pursues a stubborn submissive? A year ago, Jackson Ramsey sent Jenna Parnelle away after she gave him one night of passionate submission. At the time, he believed he was saving her from his temper and jealous nature but Jenna believes Jackson had been slumming with the chubby girl from the poor side of town.

A year later she finds herself staying at the Ramsey ranch while she helps her best friend Addison prepare for her wedding with Jackson’s older brother, Cade. Already dreading being in the same house with Jackson, her problems multiply when Jackson begins to pursue her. The last year has taught Jackson that he’s not the kind of man who would hurt a woman, much less the only woman he’s ever loved. Now he has to convince Jenna, who has decided to protect herself from further heartbreak.

The Biz:

How many books do you currently have published? Two

To Love and Obey (The Doms of Club Mystique 1)

Jackson’s Sub (The Doms of Club Mystique 2)

What is the next book you have releasing? Their Temporary Sub (The Doms of Club Mystique 3)

What book are you writing right now? Zane Ramsey’s book, no title yet but it’s the 4th book in The Doms of Club Mystique series.

What is your favorite type of Hero/Heroine to write about? Why? I like my main characters to have layers…good and bad traits, strengths and weaknesses, and issues to work through. But, having said that I like my heroes to be alphas and my heroines to be capable but feminine enough to enjoy being taken care of by the hero.

What is the hardest part of writing for you? Leaving my characters behind and moving on to the next hero and heroine and their story. That’s why the previous characters keep popping up in the next book.

Advice for aspiring and new writers? Sit down and write. Send it in. You never know what might happen. Nothing changes if you don’t take action.

Who did you dedicate your first book to? My son and my best friend.

Do you have any rituals for Book Release Day? Not really. I check the sales but mostly I just stick to my schedule. I try not to worry about things I have no control over.

What author are you dying to meet? OR What author have you met that you had a fan girl/guy moment? I met Kathleen Woodiwiss in a store in Oklahoma City once. I had just taken her latest book off the shelf when a lady standing next to me asked if the author was good. I told her she was my favorite and then we talked about how romantic the books were and how much I loved them. I didn’t realize until later that night when I was watching the local news and they showed her picture and said she was in Oklahoma City for the horse show that I had met my favorite author. Must reads: The Flame and the Flower and The Wolf and the Dove.

The Random:

How would your spouse or best friend describe you in three words? I asked my best friend and she said, mysterious, brilliant and still waters (as in run deep).

What was the last movie you went to see? It’s been so long I literally can’t remember. I usually watch movies at home where I can wear my pajamas or shorts and a baggy shirt. I’m a big fan of the Sci-Fi channel and their Saturday night movies. And popcorn.

If you were an animal what kind of animal would you be and why? A dog. They have the best lives. They’re loved and they serve a purpose.

What is your favorite quote ever? Ever notice how ‘What the hell’ is always the right answer?” Marilyn Monroe

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your super powers to be? Flying, healing hands, ability to build a shield for protection, a weapon that would stun but not kill.

What song is on your iPod/Mp3/Stereo right now? Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits

Favorite place to curl up with a good book? In the rocking chair in my office by the windows.

The Good Stuff:

If you had to pick one item to bring to the bedroom with you what would it be? A really interesting man.

What feature on the opposite sex attracts you the most? Smiling eyes.

What would you pick as the sexiest scene from a book? (Doesn’t have to be your own, but it can be)    Sophie Oaks “Siren in Waiting” when Trev tells Beth “I want you kneeling at my feet. I want you obedient. I want you submissive.”

Lovemaking, Wham Bam, Kinky Fuckery? Adventuresome, so all of the above.

Tall Dark and Handsome or Playful Funny and Sexy? I’m greedy, so both. People aren’t one dimensional. They’re constantly changing. I think taking care of someone, loving them, is trying to know them well enough to know what they need at any given moment. That’s intimacy.

What actor/actress would you be willing to run away from your life for? None. I’m happy with my life right now. I might go with someone but I would never follow them. That’s not a behavior I do.

If you had a warning label, what would it say? “Watch out for landslides.” I have a fierce temper. It flashes then it’s gone. I don’t hold grudges but I believe in having my say, tactfully, I hope.

Jackson felt Jenna’s gaze following him as he escorted Kelly, his companion for the day, from one group to another. He tightened his arm around Kelly’s waist and forced himself to avoid looking in Jenna’s direction as he nodded and chuckled and listened to Kelly chatter to their friends. What he really wanted to do was grab Jenna and take her up to the playroom, restrain her then play with her for hours.

Her breasts had been driving him crazy for years but today they were framed by the low neckline of the dress she wore in a way that made him burn to touch them. He had spent hours thinking about kissing, sucking, and nibbling on every luscious inch of them. He wanted to clamp her nipples and hear her squeak with pain then watch as her eyes dilated with arousal.

Just thinking about turning her ass rosy-red with his belt then putting her on her knees in front of him had his cock hardening. Jenna’s bottom lip was fuller than the top lip and it had a little dimple in the center that made her look like she was always pouting. Remembering all the smartass remarks she had made to him over the years, he decided stuffing her mouth with his cock would be a good way to put an end to her bratty behavior. He knew Jenna would pretend to be shocked at the dirty, nasty things he wanted to do to her but inside she would be screaming “yes, yes, yes.” Too bad he never intended to get involved with her.

“Sir, may I speak?” Kelly asked him, her voice soft and hesitant.

Jackson looked down at Kelly, then smiled. Nodding, he placed his hand on her lower back and led her aside. “I’ve already given you permission to use my name and speak whenever you like, Kelly.”

Kelly licked her lips then said, “I don’t understand my purpose for being here.” She looked around. “This isn’t the kind of party I’m used to attending. When does the fun begin?”

“That’s a lot later tonight. Right now it’s a combination graduation party for Addison Matthews and a barbecue for some local friends. I needed a companion for the day so I invited you.” Even as he spoke, he could see her clever mind analyzing the information. He tried to distract her by guiding her toward another group that included several friends from Club Mystique.

“Then, right now I’m camouflage?” she asked, grinning then looking around, “Which one is she?”

Ignoring her question, he said, “There’s Dania. Didn’t you say you wanted to talk to her?”

Kelly pursed her lips, scanned the yard, then said, “The platinum blonde in the peach-colored dress and the yummy heels standing next to the hot, redhead wearing the-someone-please-come-here-and-fuck-me outfit,” she guessed.

Narrowing his eyes, Jackson frowned. “Mind your own business.”

“Oh, come on, Jackson. You said I could say anything I wanted to say. Besides we’ve been friends for years and don’t forget I’m a bartender, which means I’m really good at reading people. Tell me what’s going on. Why are you avoiding her?” Leaning forward she quietly asked him, “Is it the dad thing?”

“What?” he growled, surprised that she would ask him that and be so near the truth.

Shrugging she smiled at him. “You’ve spoken about your adoptive parents, Jake and Katherine Ramsey. You’ve even mentioned your mother a couple of times but you’ve never said anything about your dad. Want to talk about it?”

“No. Just let it go.” Leading her over to their friends from the club, he pulled his sunglasses from his pocket, put them on then watched Jenna from the safety of the tinted lenses. A little frown appeared on his lips as he noticed she’d cut that beautiful mass of platinum hair again. He’d spent hours fantasizing about burying his hands in her hair while she sucked his cock. In his fantasies he made her look at him while he fucked her mouth. Her jade-green eyes would be dark with arousal but he would make her wait a long time before he let her come. Knowing that he had put half a world between them and that Jenna was safe in Texas had gotten him through a lot of bad nights. He let his smile slip away as he acknowledged to himself that it was getting harder and harder to stay away from her now that he was home for good. He only resisted the temptation to take a chance and go after her by remembering what a disaster his real parents’ marriage had been.

His parents constant fighting had made their home life a nightmare. The early fights had been his father accusing his mother of cheating on him which she had tearfully denied. Then, eventually, the fights had changed to his mother yelling that his father’s jealousy was ruining their family, and his father yelling that her fucking every man she encountered was what was ruining their family. The worst moment for Jackson had come after one of his parents’ fights when his mother had told him he was just like his father.  A week later his parents had died in a car wreck, but the memory of his mother saying that had stuck and he’d decided then that he would never fall in love and put a woman through that kind of hell. A promise he’d managed to keep until Jenna.

Watching Jenna and Addison, he acknowledged that Addison was beautiful but Jenna was unique. She had no idea how her sensuous innocence and over the top curvaceous body drew men like him to her. Or how the expressions that flashed across her face fascinated him. One moment she would be smiling and laughing, the next somber and quiet. Those later moments were rare, but they bothered him and made him want to take her into his arms and protect her from whatever it was that put that look in her eyes.

Other times, like today, those eyes and the dress she wore, sent a silent challenge to him. The soft innocent color of her dress blended into her lightly tanned skin, making her appear almost naked. From where he was standing he couldn’t see a panty line beneath the body-hugging material of her dress. Not even the narrow strap of a thong.

I loved the excerpt! I am always looking for a new author to read and I am adding them to my to buy list.

    • Diana, I’m happy you liked the excerpt. Here’s an excerpt of what Jenna was thinking..
Jenna was laughing and looking around at the other guests when she finally spotted Jackson. He was standing in the open patio doors. Believing that the sun was in his eyes, she allowed herself the luxury of watching him, absorbing every masculine inch of his six-foot-four-inch frame. “There’s Jackson. I can’t believe it. Two Ramsey’s making an appearance at the same time. The world must be coming to an end.”
Addison shook her head. “No, it must be halftime or something.”
Jenna nodded absently as Jackson stepped out onto the patio and was immediately surrounded by a group of men. While the men talked to him, the women with them tried their best to get Jackson’s attention. The cynical part of herself, the girl from the poor side of town, gave a silent snort of derision as she watched the hussies shift closer to him. They were so obvious, playing with their hair and fluttering their lashes as they tried to draw him away from the tall, slender brunette at his side. Damn, she thought. I will always hate seeing him with another woman.
She tortured herself by watching as he pulled his date closer to his side then looked around the yard. The sun turned his sage-green eyes to gold as his gaze swept over her. She smiled as he looked into her eyes and a wave of heated longing flowed through her. He stared at her for a moment then, without acknowledging her in any way, he turned back to the brunette by his side.
His dismissal stole her smile as she watched him bend down to listen to the woman by his side then tip his head back and laugh. Even from where she stood across the yard, Jenna could hear that deep gravelly laugh and it had the usual effect on her. Her belly muscles fluttered and the crotch of her barely-there thong became damp as her heart rate sped up.
Like all the Ramsey brothers, Jackson was self-assured and commanding. Seeing that his hair was longer than usual, she felt a rush of joy, and relief, as she decided the rumor about him leaving the military must be true. The longer length went well with his square jaw and full kissable lips, and it was just the right length for a woman’s fingers to comb through it.
Besides being her idea of the perfect man, Jenna admired Jackson’s ability to control his emotions and actions no matter the circumstance. Even when she’d been deliberately annoying, he’d just smiled and ignored her. Frowning, she decided, his calmness really pissed her off sometimes.

I would love either one of your books. Always looking for a new author to add to my fav list.

  6. I loved your answers! I hadn’t heard of these before so thanks to Lori for hosting you, they look yummy.

    • Shannon, Kathleen Woodiwiss was the first really big romance writer. She pulled romance onto the best sellers list with her books, THE FLAME AND THE FLOWER (sent in England and mostly America after the civil war) and THE WOLF AND THE DOVE (sent in England during the Norman invasion and the hero is so, so hot you’ll fall in love with him)
Other books are ASHES IN THE WIND, SHANNA, A ROSE IN WINTER. They aren’t erotic but they are some of the most romantic books I’ve ever read. The first two are my favorite.

Hi Mardi! Congratulations on your new release! I can’t wait to read it!! 🙂

    • Hi, Patty. I hope you love it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I fell in love with Cade when I wrote his book but Jackson is wonderful and very tough in his own way. I’d marry them in a minute.

  8. I just LOVED the Q&A! I bet you are glad you did not say her books sucked! LOL The excerpt sounds so yummy! Thank you for being here and sharing yourself and your books with us!

    • Tammy, I’m glad you like the first book. You’re going to love Jackson and Jenna. They really burn up the sheets. Let me know if you like him. I just had the third book in the series accepted and it may be out in May 2014. It’s for Luc and Logan. Those naughty twins.
